Travel guide of

York, England, United Kingdom, a Historic place

About York

The city of York holds many impressive distinctions. It lies in North Yorkshire, England and has been around since before Roman times. The city has been named and renamed countless times over the centuries but never lost its appeal as a major central city. Its importance in England's past has been unparalleled and remains so, even now. York sits just behind London and next to Manchester as the second most visited city in all of England. But York isn't as large as its contemporaries in this list.

This tourism hotspot is infact, a fairly compact city in size. The city centre can be covered from one end to the other in a matter of mere 20 minutes by walking. The ancient cathedral city boasts of some of the best preserved historical buildings and structures in Europe. It is also widely famous for giving its name to the city of New york in the United States. York has also been bestowed upon with the title of England's “ City of Festivals”, thanks to the abundant culturally rich festivals taking place throughout the year. Some of the official festivals include the Viking Festival, the Festival of Angels, Early Music, Late Music, the Ebor Race Meeting, Multicultural Food and Arts, Chinese New Year, Mystery Plays, Christmas St Nicholas' Fair, and the Food and Drink Festival.

The city is a tangle of quaint cobbled streets. Originally built as a fortress city, York has reminiscing structures in the form of the ancient Roman walls around the city that are still a significant landmark and the fortress wall paths provide the best views in all of York as one is taken aback by the architectural marvels. The city of York is a true example of the amalgamation of Medieval and Modern heritage and culture. At the heart of York, dominating the skyline of the whole city, lies the York Minster, a truly breathtakingly marvellous wonder of architecture and amongst the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. There are countless tourist attractions across the length and breadth of York and the city is said to unfold its secrets and special spots to the ones with patience and deep interest in the city. Another famous attraction, and possibly one of the biggest attractions in the UK outside London is the JORVIK Viking Centre that takes its visitors to ancient times with its reconstruction of Viking Age streets. The National Railway Museum is a prestigious jewel in the crown of York. It is the largest railway museum in the world and contains an unrivaled collection of locomotives, rolling stock, railway equipment, documents and records. Other castles in the vicinity include the award winning York Castle Museum built in a part of the previous prison. The Museum depicts everyday life with exhibitions to appeal to all ages. Exhibits include Kirkgate, a Victorian street; Half Moon Court, an Edwardian street; and costumes and toys through the ages. The Yorkshire Museum is a good choice for the curious young minds. Eboracum Legion Bathhouse is one of York's oldest attractions and is a hub of drinking, nightlife and entertainment clubbed with a Roman bath house in the cellar. Some of the other noteworthy attractions include The York Maze, purported to be the largest in the world, The York Dungeon for the adventure seekers where faint hearted are advised not to go, Barley Hall, Ruins of St Mary's Abbey, Clifford's tower, King’s Manor and the Battle of Fulford tour. One can also indulge in discovering the various Snickelways, undertaking the famous walking and ghost tours, enjoying the local vivid theatre performances and ofcourse, the unmissable festivals that bring all of York to life.

Local Culture - The culture of the city of York is all about displaying its vivid and rich historical background and development over the centuries. Theatre plays an important role alongside with the frequent festivals in defining the culture of this mediaeval city.

Dining - York has an entire ‘ restaurant district ‘ dedicated to high profile eateries which is proof of how serious the dining scene in this medieval city is. Besides that, York also offers countless dining options that suit all pockets in other parts of the city. The cuisines range from local to global food and places specialising in certain dishes as well. York is also touted to have perhaps the most pubs per square mile of any city in the country.

Things to Keep in Mind - York is by no means, a vehicle friendly place. Walking is the best way to get around and parking spots in the city are non existent, save for the exceptions of some hotels and public multilevel parkings. Cycling is the next best thing with admirably good cycling tracks across the city. Hotel rates tend to be on the higher side so booking in advance is advised.
