About Tallinn

The capital of Estonia, Tallinn, lies of the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. The city is only 70 km south of the Finland capital, Helsinki. The hill of Toompea which is referred as the historical heart of the old town resides within the city. The paved streets of the area remind full well of the medieval times. The houses and alleyways of this part of the city will let you on a beautiful journey of the past which is bound to rest in your heart for forever.

To the south of the town, there lies the remnant of the city wall. The rest of the town is habited between these two landmarks. Around the city wall, you will also find some of the most spectacular parks for strolling.

With the beauty and charisma of the city’s old town, you will not be surprised on knowing that the whole of the town has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Most of the area is now in a better shape and sees a huge inflow of tourists from all over the world. However, Europeans contribute to the tourist count the most.

The new town which has been developing all around the old town has been constructed in typical Soviet style. Freedom Square is the new center of the town which lies at the edge of the old town. Tallinn has seen many ups and downs throughout its course in the history. Passing from one country to another, at last, the city became a part of Estonia. And when the country declared independence, it became its capital.

To get in to the beautiful city of Tallinn, you can take direct flights to the Tallinn Airport which is just 5 km away from the city center. You must check whether your place of resident has direct flights to the city or not. Taxis, bus and tram connect the airport to the city.

Ferries and cruise ships are also available options to reach the city. The port of Tallinn is counted amongst the biggest cruise and passenger ports in the Baltic Sea. Also, depending upon your location, you can take train or bus to reach the city.

Inside Tallinn, you can use the public transport to move around. Buses, trams, sightseeing buses and trolley bus make up the public transport fleet of the city. Alternatively you can also roam around the city via taxi, rented car, rented bike and on foot.

Things worth visiting in the old city of Tallinn are the Viru Gate, Toompea Hill, Medieval old Town, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, City wall, Museum of Occupations, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Riigikogu etc. Outside the old city, you can go for a trip to Kadriorg, Kalamaja District, Palace of Kadriorg, Tallinn Linnahall, Pirita District, Patarei Prison, National Library of Estonia, Pae Park and much more.

There is also option to go swimming at the beaches of the city. Pirita Maina Beach, Stroomi Beach, Pikkari Beach, and Kakumae beach are some of the beaches at the Baltic Sea Shore. In Tallinn there also exist various sports and music festivals in where you can have fun.

Dining: In and around the Raekoja plats, you will find restaurants which serve authentic Estonian food. The prices are a bit higher here when compared to the Estonian standards but still they are cheaper than Helsinki.

Stay Safe: Tallinn is generally safe. However there are regions which have an active rate of pick pocketing and mugging. Old town is notorious for being the place for theft and pickpocketing. Follow the general tourist guidelines and stay on alert when you are alone.
