About Munich

It is the city that survived the horrors of two world wars, but not unscathed. Having been destroyed and brought back to life by the folks and great Bavarian spirit, Munich is a city with high spirits. The unofficial capital of southern Germany and the official capital of Bavaria region, Munich is the third largest city in the country by population. The metropolis however, still manages to retain its old small town charm. Home ground of the most popular beer fest in the world, the Oktoberfest, Munich is also a temple for beer worshippers. The summer seasons and Oktoberfest witness gigantic crowds thronging the city. The heavy influx of tourists is mind boggling as the whole world gathers for a glimpse of Munich. The city is rising at an unstoppable pace on the world tourism map. A former most livable city of the world, Munich is a jack of all trades. Munich offers visitors many sights and attractions. There is something for everyone, no matter if you are seeking arts and culture, shopping, fine dining, nightlife, sport events or Bavarian beer hall atmosphere. The most noteworthy of Munich's attractions include Royal avenues and squares like Briennerstraße, Ludwigstraße, Maximilianstraße and Prinzregentenstraße which are important and historic landmarks which were destroyed by heavy bombings by the allied forces and then restored back to their original form. Magnanimous and awe inspiring castles and palaces dot the Bavarian landscape and Munich is no exception. Some of the palaces in close proximity to the metropolis include Schloss Nymphenburg, Residenz, Schloss Schleißheim and Schloss Dachau. The Architecture of Munich is unparalleled in all of Bavaria. Churches and other such places of worship are a good example of the baroque style. Important government buildings and offices like Maximilianeum, Neues Rathaus,

Altes Rathaus and the epitomized world famous beer hall of Hofbräuhaus are other fine examples. Munich is the art capital of Germany with the best museums on offer. There are innumerable varieties to choose from and endless art galleries to compliment the Museums. Munich is also home to the famous luxury carmaker BMW which has its mind boggling headquarters in the city. A fine modern architectural specimen, the headquarters are neighboured by the esteem BMW museum. Englischer Garten located in Schwabing is Munich's heart and its answer to New York's Central Park and London's Hyde Park with a size greater than both. Olympia park is another grand tourist hotspot and the best example of post Olympic infrastructure put to good use,

serving as a venue for cultural, social, and religious events. The park is also a popular retreat for Munich residents where they enjoy raking a walk or rowing on the lake. Munich is a city of festivals with events all year round. The same goes for nightlife as parties are never-ending with an impossible number of bars, clubs and discs to cater to people from all legal age groups. Munich is just a beginning, a base for the more scenic beauty of Bavaria. A perfect pit stop to soak in the city spirit while experiencing the natural beauty at the foot of Alps and Alpine clichés.

Local Culture - The culture of Munich is second to none in all of Germany with its Museums even rivalling and in many cases, getting the better of their Berlin counterparts. It manages to achieve a rare feat of staying at the forefront of technological advancements while maintaining and promoting its cultural heritage at the same time. Munich is internationally known for its collection of ancient, classic and modern art, which can be found in numerous museums throughout the city. The most popular museums are located in the Kunstareal area in Maxvorstadt. Open air Beer gardens are an essential part of Munich as these are highly social places to meet new people and gather experiences.

Dining - Munich is home to everything quintessentially Bavarian and is especially well-known for the Münchner Weisswurst, a veal-based breakfast sausage that is traditionally eaten as a late breakfast. Pretzels are very common and a local speciality! Bavarian meals generally start with one of the various varieties of soup and the main dishes are typically meat based. Some of the delicacies include Schweinsbraten which is roasted pork, Spanferkel- roasted suckling pig, Brathendl or simply Hendl- roasted chicken or Bauernente -roasted duck. Those are usually served with gravy and Knödel (large round poached or boiled potato or bread dumplings) or egg noodles. Desserts are a tempting affair with options like Bayrische Creme, Dampfnudeln or the Austrian import of Kaiserschmarrn. For the ones fancying a quick snack, Munich offers a white roll filled with a thick warm slice of a baked mixture of veal, pork, spices and a hint of lemon zest known as Leberkässemmeln. The best ones can be devoured in one of the numerous butcher shops at the western edge of Viktualienmarkt which also offer white slices of bread with roasted pork. Munich also offers a plethora of other options ranging from worldly cuisines.

Things to Keep in Mind - You have to be at least 18 years old to get into most clubs and discos in Munich. Always have your passport or ID card with you. Think twice before trying to keep up with the locals or looking for your maximum level of alcohol intoxication - being drunk will sharply raise your chances of injuring yourself. Another issue for people not used to driving or walking on ice or snow, are wintery road and sidewalk conditions.
