About Lucknow

Lucknow: City of Nawabs Lucknow is the capital city of the state of Uttar Pradesh of India. It is a multicultural city flourished during 18th and 19th century, and had been the cultural, artistic, commercial and educational hub. The city is located on the north-west shore of river Gomati. Many great masters of Indian classical and western pop music were born here. The city is often designated as the City of Nawabs, Golden City of East, Shiraz-a-hind and Constantinople of the East. City is believed to be established by the younger brother of Lord Rama, Lakshman. Later the city was ruled by the Nawabs. Lucknow has a warm humid climate. Summers are extremely hot with temperature rising to 40°C. Winters are slightly chilled with temperature ranging at 25°C. It is preferable to visit city during October to February. The city is 498 km away from New Delhi and has a good network of road, rail and air routes. Many acquisitive monuments build during ancient times are still preserved for the future generations. So if you are planning a Lucknow tour, check out the following monuments: Bara Imambara: Built in 1784 by Asaf-ud-Daula, the fourth Nawab of Awadh is a beautiful monument. The hall is said to be the world’s largest arched hall without any pillars. Chota Imambara: The Husainabad Imambara, commonly called Chota Imambara is the mausoleum of Mohammed Ali Shah who started the construction of Jama Masjid. British Residency: It is declared as protected monument by Archeological Survey of India. British Residency is a famous landmark of the place. Jama Masjid: Situated near Imambada lies the biggest mosque of Lucknow which was constructed in 1840s. Clock Tower: It is the tallest clock tower in India reaching 221 feet. It was built in 1880 by Nawab Nasir-ud-din-Haider in honor of Sir George Cooper, the first lieutenant governor of United Province of Awadh. The monument is a brilliant example of English architecture. Chattar Manzil: The name of the building is derived from its umbrella shaped dome giving it a strikingly different architecture. Hazratganj: Being the nerve center of the city, the place offers commercial vibrancy and Victorian era pathways. It was built by Amzad Ali Shah, the fourth king of Awadh and originally known as Queen’s way. Rumi Darwaza: Constructed in year 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula. Visiting Lucknow never gets boring and there is so much to see that you have to come here more than once. It was about two years ago, I visited Lucknow with my friend who lived in Khadra (Lucknow). We met up and hired a taxi to reach the Bada Imambara. It was evening and the redness of sun behind the white building was fascinating to the highest level. We entered the main gate crossing the small shops filled with attractive artifacts. The garden before the main building was adding to the charm of the place. We roamed the place and came back when it got dark. What followed after that was a heavy meal of Kebab Paratha, Nahari Kulcha and Biryani at Khadra. We sat and talked while having cold drink and then I took the bus back to Khairabad.

Tips:

There is nothing important to be wary of in Lucknow. The place is really friendly and the transportation is easy and cheap. One thing to keep in mind is to visit according to the season and temperature. Do not go charging in midday during summer or you will feel like ripping your clothes and dive in to the pond there.
