About Lisbon

Cradled in the midst of seven imposing and cinematic hills is Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal. Being one of the rare western European cities to face the ocean, Lisbon chooses to define itself with the enchanting water. With Cobbled alleyways and each nook and corner postcard perfect, the city has all the right ingredients to allure tourists. Lisbon was decimated and reduced to shreds by the great earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit its shores in 1770. It has made great strides since then to emerge as the cynosure of Portugal’s thriving tourism industry. Architecturally, it is one of the first cities in the world to adopt Earthquake resistant structures. The seven hills spread across the cityscape have viewpoints locally known as miradouros that offer unmatched views of a very stunning Lisbon and beyond. The city itself is an undiscovered gem of Europe despite being a major metropolitan. The lush greenery on the hills and around the city make it look even more atmospheric. Top attractions include Cristo Rei, a tall statue of Jesus similar to Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro which offers pleasant views of the area. Old trams like tram28 are must to be experienced. One can also take a trip to the funiculars in Lisbon. The main city square where most of the activity and rush can be seen is Rossio and is a must visit for tourists wanting to experience life in Lisbon.Belem is a monument rich district with a lot of famous tourist attractions like the Grand Belem tower, Jerónimos Monastery and various museums situated here. Lisbon is also home to many gardens, a Zoological park and even an oceanarium where one can enjoy looking at the life in oceans throughout the world.

Local Culture - Lisbon's cultural history dates back to prehistoric times. The people are warm and welcoming and somewhat conservative. Various festivals are celebrated with much pomp and show while days of important Saints are considered very important with a majority of the population consisting of Roman Catholics. Unlike most other cultures, where a clean plate after meal signifies food well enjoyed, Portuguese prefer to leave some food on their plates.

Dining - Portugal lies on the Westernmost end of Europe's main land mass and faces the Atlantic ocean and loosely follows the Mediterranean cuisine. It is a country of fish eaters and the capital city of Lisbon is no different. From sardines, mackerels to cod, fish is a staple. Pork is a commonly eaten meat and also finds mention on most menus throughout the city. Portuguese take great pride in their cakes, sweets and pastries which is evident if one pays a visit to one of the many local bakeries. Most eateries are small and family run. The options are countless and each more tempting than the other!

Things to Keep in Mind - The local people love the tourists who try to speak the native language or the basic terms at least. Never ask the taxi drivers for good eating spots as they tend to take you to tourist oriented expensive restaurants with low-quality food and get commission for it.
