About Bruges

An international metropolis since time immemorial, Bruges is bound to make a lot of hearts flutter with joy. It is a city of unfathomable human proportions. This northern lying town in Flanders is one of the best preserved pre motorised cities in Europe and is proud to flaunt it. All the natural and architectural beauty of Burges make it a postcard perfect destination with unmatched charm. Belgium’s excellent transport system ensures that the city is well connected with all other major cities within the country as well as with major international destinations. There are plenty of picturesque cobbled lanes and eye popping canals that link photogenic market squares lined with soaring towers, historic churches as well as old whitewashed almshouses. The constant tourist rush throughout summers is a clear indication of how famous Bruges actually is. The spring season holds a special charm when daffodils are in bloom and carpet the historic courtyard and even the winter with icy magnificence of the whole town is open to be discovered yourself! The history of Bruges is so remarkable and important that the city was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in the year 1998. There are plenty of tourist honey pots in this widely popular city, many of them related to the national favourite, chocolate. Some of the not to be missed highlights in the city include the Groeninge Museum, also known as the city Museum of Fine Arts, which houses a collection of artworks that span several centuries and focuses mainly on works by painters who lived and worked in the city of Bruges. Basilica of the Holy Blood is a beautiful church on the Burg square. The gothic architectural marvel houses a relic - a vial of blood that is said to be that of Jesus. Other than chocolate, Belgium and Bruges are famous for their wine. Brewery De Halve Maan is a brewery annex beer museum that offers a tour of the beer making process. Onze Lieve Vrouwkerk is another fascinating church from the Romanesque and Gothic periods mainly noted for its architecture and very fine tombs in its east end. It also houses one of the few Michelangelo sculptures outside of Italy. Choco story Museum is a tasty tourist attraction. The Museum is built on several floors of a period house and describes chocolate's transition from cocoa into chocolate. It is run by the Belgian chocolate manufacturer Belcolade. Another out of the ordinary museum, the Friet Museum in Bruges is the only frites Museum in the world and it tells the story of the humble potato from South America and how it has evolved into a fry. Markt and Burg squares are the most tourist packed destinations in all of Bruges and is void of the local charm that can be found only by exploring away from the city centres and into the cobbled lanes of Bruges. Climbing up Belfry Climb in Grote Markt offers stunning views of the city from a height of 83 metres. It is absolutely essential to take a ride on one of the tour boats around the canals as a boat tour will show you places which are otherwise unreachable, as not every canal runs next to a street. One can also indulge in romantic hot air balloon rides or horse drawn carts. Make sure to shop for one of those delectable chocolates while you're in the land of chocolate!

Local Culture - Bruges is one of Belgium's cultural hubs with Concertgebouw Brugge considered to be one of the city's cultural temples. It is a world class program in classical music and contemporary dance which also doubles as the hub of other music festivals.

Dining - Restaurants in Bruges are not always cheap or delightful, although frites with mayonnaise are outstanding here. The popular destinations like the central market place and Burg square should be avoided. Great food can be found if one dares to venture off the beaten track. Italian delicacies with a local twist are a hit in Bruges. Beer is the staple beverage and something as famous and important as the local chocolate.

Things to Keep in Mind - Bruges has a poor reputation for its weather and the summer visitor should always be prepared for rain in the city as that warm and sunny weather is not constant during that season. It is a bad idea to venture into the tightly packed cobbled streets of Bruges with a car. The historical centre must be traversed on foot, by bicycle, by horse-drawn carriage or by boat to enjoy it. Don't forget to visit the chapel underneath the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Beer tours start at the exact turn of the hour so be at least fifteen minutes early as there is a maximum amount of people that can join.
