What do non-Asian tourists/ travelers think of Singapore as a travel destination?
Neelkant asked on 2018-04-29
Non-Asian have been to Singapore as a tourist and they have noticed that the food is excellent and varied and the restaurant sanitation, even in street stalls, is impeccable. There are shiny new shopping malls with no end of luxury goods. Shopping in more traditional areas like Arab St can be interesting.
The cultural attractions are limited at best; all the docents at the art museum (which has some interesting stuff) seem to be European expats. The manufactured tourist attractions like the Bird Park and the Chinese and Japanese gardens are very nice.
And the public transit is great. Singapore is clean, shiny, and safe. The government does not tolerate racial/ethnic conflict (which is good) or any political dissent or social progress (bad). Singaporeans think about making money and spending it, and not much else. The various government campaigns like Speak Mandarin, not Dialect (why were these signs in English?) are amusing and demonstrate how much the government wishes to control daily non-economic life. No one would believe the draconian fines for spitting, littering, or chewing gum unless they saw the signs.
