Travelling is something all of us want to do (well, almost all of us), sooner or later. But we find it difficult because it is something that is pretty expensive. Whilst many of us are complaining about the lack of funds, and are waiting for the right time to visit our desired holiday destination, there are several hacks that can help us visit that place sooner than we may have thought.

Following are some genuine travel hacks that can make your trip a lot cheaper if put into practice (genuine because I have tried and tested each of them myself) -

1. Book your flight tickets well in advance -

The ideal time to book flight ticket(s) is during the sale period. If not during the sale period, book your ticket(s) two to three months in advance. Not less, not more. This is when the flight tickets are generally at their lowest. An addition to this point would be that never search for a flight of more than one person at once. Select one person even if the trip would comprise of more than one person at the time of checking the prices.

2. Carry a Travelcard for your international trip -

When traveling out of India, never exchange currencies at the airport. The best way to save money would be to get a travel card. A Travel Card is like a debit card which has your preferred currency in it and can be used like a debit card at the ATMs and for online transactions. Also, it is a zillion time safer than carrying liquid money. Do not, I repeat, do not take your bank's advice of using your international debit card outside your country. It is a trap, and should only be considered if you are out of options.

3. Book a room or a bed in a dorm at a hotel using site such as Booking.com -

Save yourself from paying upfront for hotel bookings by booking through Booking.com. Albeit not all listing on the website provides you with that option, most of them do. And you can cancel your booking if you find something better. You will not incur any cancellation cost provided you cancel it before the cancellation period gest exhausted. However, the best use of this website can be made at the time of applying for your visa. Book an accommodation, so that you can provide an address proof when you apply for your visa.

4. Eat where the locals do, not where the tourists do -

The fancy restaurants you see in the destinations you travel to are eyed for the elites and those who travel for leisure. The food would be rather ordinary, and they will charge you a lot more than they should. Unless your priority is the ambiance and not the food, eat at one such restaurant. But if it is the food that is your priority, head where the locals eat. They know the best food which matches its price. Just follow their leads, for this hack never fails.

5. Avoid traveling during the high season -

While traveling, nothing burns your money as rapidly as traveling during the high season. Prices for everything shoots up. This is the time when locals can maximize their profit earnings. What costs less than a thousand rupees for a night's stay at the houseboat in Dal Lake during the winters would cost quadruple times more during a night's stay at the same houseboat during the summer seasons. There is a reason why they say, "travel during the shoulder season."

6. Be flexible -

This one is a broad point, but serves the primary purpose of saving money. If staying a little far from the center of the city or the town is considerably less expensive, do that. If taking a train to your next destination is considerably less expensive than taking a bus, do that. If going to the museum on a weekday rather than on a weekend saves you quite some money, it might be a good idea to avoid visiting the museum on a weekend.

7. Hitchhike -

The sense of adventure that hitchhiking brings is unparalleled. However, the primary reason why it is still in practice is simply that it saves you your hard-earned money. It is true that the experience seems thrilling and exciting, but the fact that you can travel from one place to another for free should not be neglected.

8. Travel light -

If there would be a golden rule in the world of traveling, it would most probably be this one. Volumes have been written on the importance of this point, and yet, most travelers tend to miss it - travel light. By traveling light, one can avoid the excess baggage fee and move around more easily. Anyway, one often carries stuff that they never use. If you can follow this point, you can save way more than you can imagine.

10. Consider making your food rather than eating out -

As mentioned earlier, to save money, fancy restaurants should be avoided. In case if you do not like the food of some place, or want to have something much healthier, go grocery shopping and cook your food. It may be a little tiring, but it will save you a lot of money. This hack, however, mainly works for people traveling in a group comprising of at least two people.

11. Sign up on Couchsurfing -

One of the major costs that add up to the overall expenses is accommodation. Couchsurfing is the platform that allows a traveler to stay at a local's place for free for a certain period of time, as per the host's and guest's liking. Unless you are traveling with your family, Couchsurfing can help you bring down your accommodation costing to quite an extent. Also, it allows you to experience the place through the eyes of a local.

12. Avoid buying the fancy souvenirs -

You know the exquisite showpiece that you see at the shops outside a historic monument, or the adorable keychains being sold at a spot which is full of tourists are the worst places to buy anything as a memoir. In most cases, the products are pathetic in quality, and you won't care about it as much as you think you will at the tie of purchasing. But the biggest reason why you should not buy them is that they are EXTREMELY overpriced. If you really want something from that place which you can keep some memorabilia, invest in postcards. They are, metamorphically speaking, gold, and totally worth it (provided they are not overpriced).
