From the geographical point of view, India lies in a naturally gifted part of the world. With the presence of mighty mountains and vibrant beaches, majestic waterfalls and exotic forests; India has a lot to offer to all kinds of travelers. Being the seventh largest country in the world, India is home to a huge number of sites which are ideal for camping. While some of those sites are closer to the cities and towns and provide as much comfort as possible (thereby defeating the purpose of camping); others are nestled in the laps of nature. Some of these camping sites are euphoric and attract a huge number of people from different parts of the planet. Whether you are looking for an adventurous campsite or a campsite that will offer you tranquillity, India has it all. With this article, I share with you a compilation of ten of the most stunning sites in India where you should head for camping:
1. Jaisalmer Sand Dunes Campsite -
The hybrid of cultural and natural setting makes Sam in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, a perfect place for camping. Referred to the Golden City of India, Jaisalmer offers desert safari like no other place in India. Sleeping on a blanket of soft sand beneath a mattress makes for a comfortable sleep in nature's lap. Local artists perform once a week, and there are loads of camels to ride on. Giving a feel of the Arabian Nights, Desert Camping offers an experience like none other. November to December is the best time for camping in Rajasthan.
2. Pangong Tso Campsite -
Thanks to the Bollywood movie, '3 Idiots', Pangong Tso has probably become the most popular camping site in the country ... and rightly so. Nestled in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, it draws tens of thousands of people to camp, every year. The presence of the exotic turquoise and deep blue color lake, surrounded by the mountains make it an ethereal site for camping. There are a lot of camps to choose from, depending on one's budget. The best time to camp near Pangong Tso is from June to September.
3. Sonamarg Campsite-
Located in the heavenly state of Jammu and Kashmir, Sonamarg translates to 'Meadows of Gold' in English. Campers here get to witness lush green meadows and snow covered mountains, and also get to breathe oxygen in its most natural form. It is a great site for camping as a lot of visitors - including trekkers and pilgrims - spend a night here before continuing their respective journey. The Sindh Sagar flowing by from this site only makes the visual treat for the campers more alluring. The best time to camp at Sonamarg is during the months of May and June.
4. Prashar Lake Campsite-
It is next to what appears as if a giant piece of mirror is fixed on the ground, and is surrounded by lush green meadow, valleys, and a euphoric temple. There is an adorable, petite island floating in the middle of the lake. That is not all. On a clear night, one can see gazillions of stars twinkling in the sky. Located nearly 50 kilometers from the town of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, this site attracts several thousand visitors throughout the year. Campers, however, must carry their own tents to camp here. March to May is the best time to camp here.
5. Dawki River Campsite -
Located in the North-eastern state of Meghalaya, Dawki is quite possibly the gorgeous river in India. What makes Dawki river camp such a wonderful place for camping is the variety it offers. The river is so clear, that one can see the shadows of a boat on the floor while the boat floats on the surface. There are so many things one can do whilst camp here. Snorkelling, Ziplining, Cliff Diving, Kayaking, are some of the adventurous activities one can engross oneself in. And after a tiring and adventurous day, sit by the bonfire, and gaze at the stars whilst listening to the music played by the river. October to March is the best time to camp at Dawki River Campsite.
6. Chandra Taal Campsite -
Calmly nestled in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh, Chandra Taal campsite is one of the most pristine campsites in the country. It is believed that this site is of religious importance. Several companies have pitched their temporary tents around this site which offers breathtakingly beautiful views throughout the day. Among other natural things, one can easily see our galaxy - The Milky Way - on a clear night, whilst camping here. September to October is the best time to camp at Chandra Taal campsite.
7. Tso Moriri Campsite -
If each one of us were to describe the most exquisite camping sites in the world, most of our descriptions would match to that of Tso Moriri. Located in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Tso Moriri is the most underrated lake in the country. In a state that is graced with quite a few stunning lakes, Tso Moriri campsite is relatively less popular. It might not be as beautiful as Pangong Tso (that still makes it extremely beautiful), but if you want to attain some inner peace whilst enjoying the raw beauty of nature, sans the crowd, head to Tso Moriri. The best time to camp at Tso Moriri campsite is from June to September.
8. Coorg Campsites-
Coorg is a splendid hill station in Karnataka and is popularly known as a weekend getaway from Bangalore. It is famous for being a coffee estate but also offers a bunch of attractions such as trekking trails, waterfalls, and camping sites. The thing about camping in Coorg is that there are several sites that are ideal for camping. Safe to say, it is one the most camping friendly locations in this part of the world. Just visit this place, pitch a tent, and enjoy your coffee. November to April is the best time to camp in Coorg.
9. Rishikesh River Campsite -
Another popular camping site to make it to this list is Rishikesh River Camping. With so many adrenaline pumping activities lined up in the town, including River Rafting, Bungee Jumping, and Kayaking; Camping here is merely an excuse. Attracting people from across the globe, Rishikesh offers all kinds of camping experiences to campers. One can opt for luxury, budget, and anything in between. The best time for camping in Rishikesh is from September to October, and from March to April.
10. Anjuna Beach Campsite -
This list would remain incomplete without the mention of Anjuna Beach, located in Goa. It would not be wrong to say that this place draws more foreign visitors than Indian visitors, every year. What makes this place ideal for camping is its vibrancy is that one can meet people from different parts of the world here. Each night brings a live jamming session where people sit around a bonfire and enjoy a laidback vacation. November to February is the ideal time to camp at Anjuna Beach.
