A small hill station in Pune district, Lonavala is certainly worth visiting. Its proximity to the economic capital of India, Mumbai also makes it one of the favourite and most visited tourist spots in Maharashtra. A fine weekend getaway for the locals, an introduction to the history of Buddhism and traces of Maratha kingdom in alignment with nature, Lonavala is something you will never be bored of!

I visited Lonavala for two days and one night in the month of September in 2016. Although it lies midway two of the fastest emerging cities of India, Mumbai and Pune, this hill station is still little far from the fast life of the respective places. Relatively calm place, this town has got something to offer for the people of different interests and here are a few places which you can visit when in Lonavala!

1. Karla/Bhaja Caves

Situated at a smaller distance from each other, these caves mark the presence of Buddhists history and architecture. Beautifully carved out ages ago, these similar caves still stand tall. The history of these caves dates back to somewhere in 2 BC. Having a minimal entry fee, you can have the taste of the finest Buddhist architecture in these two caves. While Karla is still more touristy, Bhaja is lesser explored and exposed to the tourists considering its location.

2. Lohagarh Fort

Offering one of the finest views from the top, Lohagarh Fort boasts about the legacy of Maratha empire in the present day. Connected with the nearby Vishapur fort, Lohagarh fort trek is a moderate one to accomplish. An ASI protected monument, you will find few temples, a mazar and the iconic pleasing view for your eyes!

3. Tiger's point

If you ask me, the road to tiger point thrilled me more than the point itself. It was a little late in the evening when I arrived here but the enthusiasm of this place is unmatchable. Do not forget to have the taste of cheese bhajiya from the local stalls (you would not find them anywhere else in the world!)

4. Bhushi Dam

A masonry dam on the Indrani river in Lonavala, Bhushi Dam is another tourist spot in the town. You may find many negative reviews of this place online and it is inevitable since it is the place to visit only during or after the monsoon. The time I visited the dam, it was energetic and I spent a fine evening here. Also, the adult company is strictly advised when visiting the dam for the kids.

5. German Bakery

German Bakery in the heart of the town is something you will thank me for after visiting. I will leave it for you to explore the food options here based on your interest and choice of the food but trust me when I appreciate the wide range of products available. You can also pick a beer with your friends or even alone at the German bakery.
